A Life Pleasing to God

A Life Pleasing to God

Let’s first reflect on God’s instructions for living a life that pleases Him and a guide in godliness and righteousness.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

“I am the Lord your God…”Exodus 20:1-17

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image…
  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother… (The only commandment with a promise!)
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s belongings.

💛 THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT ACCORDING TO JESUS

In Matthew 22:36–40, when asked what the greatest commandment is, Jesus responded:

‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

These words help us understand that the first four commandments are about loving God, the next six guides us in loving others.

🙏 So, What is a Life that is Pleasing and Acceptable to God?

Living a life pleasing to God begins with an intimate, personal relationship with Jesus ("you shall love the Lord your God" with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength).  It’s not just about following rules—it’s about loving Him, honoring Him, knowing Him, and walking in His will.

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" – Matthew 6:33

When we spend time immersed in God’s word, we will know His attributes, recognize His voice, and His will for our life.  It’s a Christian journey of growth, faith, and trust.

Fellowship with Jesus involves intentional time spent in prayer, being in His presence, and reading the Bible (His letter to His believers). Find a quiet space, approach Him humbly, and acknowledge His holiness and sovereignty. Make daily prayers a habit and communicate your needs with gratitude – Philippians 4:6.

Prayer is not just speaking—it’s listening. At times, it's hard to tell if the voice I hear is mine or God's. With time and constant fellowship with Jesus, you'll learn His way of communicating with you. People’s experiences with God in the Bible were varied, so will ours. Your experience with God will be very personal and unlike no other.

Through my personal experiences, I’ve found God often usually speaks through my morning devotionals. I don't get answers or encouragements the next morning. Sometimes it takes a another day or more. There are times when He will use other methods to answer prayers such as circumstances, a church message, or a person. His timing is perfect, even if it's not what we would expect. Be encouraged in prayer no matter what the situation or circumstance you are in. God is always available and waiting for you to talk to Him.

❤️ THE SECOND GREATEST COMMANDMENT: LOVE OTHERS

“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” – John 15:12

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself” – Matthew 22:40.

We serve God through serving others in love and humility. Living a life of love means reflecting Christ in our words, our actions, and even our appearance.

A principle I often share with my children, inspired by the late Dr. Charles Stanley:
“Do your best, Be your best, and Look your best.”

This applies not only to ourselves but to how we honor others.

We are to:

  • Conduct ourselves in a godly way (Romans 12)
  • Fix our thoughts on what is pure, lovely, virtuous, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8)
  • Dress modestly, with humility and grace (1 Timothy 2:9)

In our everyday lives, there will be opportunities to love others by serving and giving of our time, resources, talents, and skills. These opportunities may be at the office, at school, or during a daily walk. Take the opportunity that God has placed in your heart and before you to give, help, work, and do good deeds.
